What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy was founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the late 19th century. Dr. Still was an American physician who developed a new approach to healthcare based on the principles of anatomy, physiology, and the relationship between structure and function. His holistic approach recognizes that the body is an interconnected system, where the different structures and body systems influence one another. With this approach he was able to help many patients.

How Does Osteopathy Work?

Osteopathy uses hands-on techniques to identify and address areas of restriction or dysfunction within the body. Osteopathic Practitioners focus on all tissue layers such as the skin, connective tissue, muscles and ligaments in order to free the underlying nerve, blood and lymphatic pathways. By improving mobility and function in these areas, Osteopathy aims to support the body’s natural ability to adapt, regulate, and heal itself.

What Does Osteopathic Treatment Look Like?

Osteopathic treatment is a manual therapy. Your osteopathic practitioner uses a variety of manual techniques to assess and treat areas of the body where movement or function may be restricted.

A significant part of an osteopathic treatment involves assessment. Your practitioner considers how different areas of the body move and interact with one another rather than focusing solely on the location of your symptoms.

Treatment may include myofascial release, soft tissue techniques, joint mobilization, articulation, post-isometric relaxation and other manual approaches according to the patient’s presentation.

Every person presents differently, therefore treatment is individualized to the findings of each patient. No two treatments are same.

Let’s help your body recover through individualized osteopathic treatment.
